1. Introduction
The Instant Detect app (“the App”) shows the images captured by Instant Detect camera traps in the projects you have access to, and can notify you when a camera captures a new image. The App is made by Stichting Hack The Planet (“we”). This policy explains which data the App uses for that, and what it doesn’t do.
2. Your account
2.1 The App is for people who have been given access to an Instant Detect project by the organisation running it. Accounts are created by that organisation or by us; you cannot sign up from the App.
2.2 When you log in, the App sends your username and password to the Instant Detect server. The password is not stored on your device. The server returns a session token that the App keeps on your device until you log out.
2.3 To recognise your device across logins, the App creates a random device identifier when it is installed and sends it along with the device type (Android or iOS). This identifier is not linked to your phone’s hardware, advertising ID or phone number.
3. Camera images
The images you see in the App are captured by camera traps placed in the field by the projects you belong to, and may show animals, people or vehicles. They are stored on the Instant Detect server and shown in the App only to users with access to the project. The App keeps a temporary copy of images on your device so they load faster; the operating system can clear it at any time and it is removed when you uninstall the App.
4. Notifications
If you turn on notifications for a project, the App asks your phone for a push token and sends it to the Instant Detect server, together with your notification settings (which projects, and how often). Notifications are delivered through Firebase Cloud Messaging, a Google service; Google receives the push token and the notification content (the project name, the number of new images and a reference to the newest image) in order to deliver it. See https://firebase.google.com/support/privacy. When you turn notifications off or log out, the server stops sending notifications to your device.
5. Crash reports
When the App crashes, it sends a crash report through Firebase Crashlytics, a Google service, so we can find and fix the problem. A report contains technical details only: where in the App the crash happened, the device model, operating system version, App version and a random installation identifier. It does not contain your username, the images or your notification settings. See https://firebase.google.com/support/privacy.
6. What the App does not do
The App does not use analytics or advertising, does not track you across apps or websites, does not access your location, contacts, camera or photos, and does not sell or share data with third parties other than as described above.
7. Data on your device
Besides the session token and image cache, the App stores your chosen server, the project you last viewed and which images you have already seen, so it can reopen where you left off and mark new images. Logging out removes the session token; uninstalling the App removes all of it.
8. Keeping and deleting data
Your account and notification settings are kept for as long as you have access to a project. Logging out deactivates the session on the server. To have your account and related data removed, contact us at the address below or ask the organisation that gave you access.
9. Children
The App is not directed at children under the age of 16.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. Changes are published on this page with a new revision date.
